Nairobi, Kenya – The 21st Plenary Assembly of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) officially opened today at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Nairobi, bringing together bishops, religious leaders, and delegates from across the region.

The theme of this year's assembly is "Young People, Hope and Synodality: Journeying Together in Eastern Africa." The gathering comes at a pivotal moment for the Church in the region, as it seeks to respond to the challenges and opportunities facing young people in a rapidly changing world.

A Historic Gathering

Over 200 delegates, including bishops from AMECEA member countries — Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia — are participating in the week-long assembly. The event marks the first major in-person plenary since the COVID-19 pandemic and the first under the leadership of AMECEA's new Chairman.

In his opening address, the AMECEA Chairman emphasized the importance of listening to young people and walking together as a synodal Church.

"Our young people are not just the future of the Church — they are the Church of today. We must create spaces where they can be heard, valued, and empowered to take their rightful place in the mission of evangelization."

Focus on Young People

The assembly features a series of keynote addresses, panel discussions, and working groups centered on the needs and aspirations of young people in Eastern Africa. Key topics include:

• Youth Participation in the Church: How to involve young people in decision-making and leadership roles.
• Faith Formation: Innovative approaches to catechesis and youth ministry in a digital age.
• Social Challenges: Responding to unemployment, migration, and mental health issues among young people.
• Synodality: Implementing the vision of the Synod on Synodality at the local and regional levels.

Synodality at the Heart

A significant portion of the assembly is dedicated to reflecting on the experience of the Synod on Synodality and how it can be lived out in the context of Eastern Africa. Delegates are sharing best practices and challenges from their respective dioceses and countries.

The assembly also includes moments of prayer, cultural celebrations, and fraternal sharing, reflecting the rich diversity of the AMECEA region.

Looking Ahead

The 21st Plenary Assembly is expected to conclude with a final communiqué outlining concrete commitments and pastoral priorities for the Church in Eastern Africa. These will focus on empowering young people, fostering synodal leadership, and strengthening collaboration among member conferences.
